We saw a pared-down version of the 93rd Oscars this year. The stars showed up at Union Station, Los Angeles, on Sunday, April 25th, but not in the usual step-and-repeat style for which the Oscars are renowned. Instead, the Oscars coverage took place in multiple hubs worldwide – such as London and Paris – virtual ceremonies and media press centres to adhere to COVID-19 safety measures. Against all odds, Hollywood glamour remains at the heart of Oscars tradition.
The nominees stopped at nothing to dazzle in the latest haute couture, fine jewellery and custom-made attire from designer ateliers. Pink is fast becoming a hot favourite on the red carpet in addition to a new colour wave of brown, black and white combined. Sacha Baron Cohen, nominated as best supporting actor for The Trial of The Chicago 7 wore a matching Ralph Lauren brown jacket and bow tie, paired with a white shirt and cream trousers. Charles D.King, the producer of Judas & The Black Messiah, also sported a brown, black and white outfit by Frere.
Colman Domingo, the Oscars’ After Dark host, enlivened the red carpet by wearing a bright pink Atelier Versace suit. Who dares wins, and Colman most definitely owned the red carpet on the Oscars night. Nominated in a best supporting acting role for Regina King’s One Night In Miami, Leslie Odom Jr stole the spotlight in an Oscars-gold Brioni suit (made from Jacquard fabric with real 24-karat gold-threaded into the suit) and a Cartier ring. The movers and shakers of LA LA land have upped their style stakes in a way that symbolises an openness to change, colour and new beginnings.
To pin down the ultimate King and Queen of red carpet style is not an easy feat, considering the number of leading talented men and women who brought their A-game to the Oscars red carpet. They embraced the spirit of the ceremony with innovative and classic style choices. Nominated in the best supporting actor category for Judas and the Black Messiah, LaKeith Stanfield wore a Saint Laurent 1970s inspired black jumpsuit with an oversized white collar. Such an outfit is rather daring and quite tricky to pull off, yet a timeless brand.
Daniel Kaluuya dressed for the occasion in an understated Bottega Veneta and jewellery by David Yurman. He won an Oscar for best supporting actor for Judas and the Black Messiah. Tyler Perry also chose a more classic ensemble, a made-to-measure suit by Giorgio Armani with a matching jacket, bow tie, and shirt in emerald green paired with black trousers. Contrasting textures, colours, and styles were overtaking the conventional tuxedo. The ladies looked equally majestic in jaw-dropping gowns that featured intricate embellishments. Zendaya wore Valentino Haute Couture and Bulgari jewellery worth $6 million. Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan in the best actress category for Promising Young Woman looked like a goddess in yet another Valentino Haute Couture gown. Another favourite was Angela Bassett, who wore Alberta Ferretti and Chopard jewellery.
After a tumultuous year, the 93rd Academy Awards reminded the world that entertainment – whether on the red carpet, big screen, or at home – feeds our creative spirit and is a much-needed lifeline when the world becomes still. What emerged as reality is Netflix as a saving grace. The Oscars are also synonymous with global fashion. New trends have emerged from this year’s ceremony: midriff-baring gowns, plunging necklines, metallics, and vibrant florals alongside traditional red carpet codes – the classic ‘lady in red’ dress. Louis Vuitton, Valentino Haute Couture, Dior and Armani Privé were the stars’ hot favourites. That said, the Oscars for the best-dressed stars are as follows:
