Stop! Buy & Bite has arrived in the heart of Farringdon. The bright orange exterior of this new Asian restaurant has brought a summer glow to the quaint aesthetic of Cowcross Street. The concept of Buy & Bite is equally fun-loving as it is the UK’s first Omurice grab-and-go restaurant. In essence, Omurice is traditionally rice with your choice of meat in an ‘omelette blanket wrap’ – a classic Japanese rice dish. At first, I found the concept unusual, seeing as I prefer uncomplicated dishes; hence, I would typically have a plain omelette on toast with avocado for breakfast or lunch. Perhaps that is plain boring or unadventurous. Buy & Bite, however, offers a tantalising, palate-teasing menu enough to broaden your culinary horizons.

There are six variations of Omurice, including Katsu Curry, Crispy Fried Tofu Curry and Shrimp Tempura Curry, to name but a few. Furthermore, Buy & Bite’s portion sizes are substantial while catering to a balanced diet of carbohydrates, protein and greens. I ordered the Crispy Fried Tofu with noodles, and all rice and noodle dishes come with carrots and edamame on the side. A meal is not quite the same without greens, as any encouraging parent would advise.

The Bao Buns were my favourite on the menu, filled with succulent meat, tofu or shrimp and steamed to perfection. The spongy-soft texture of the bun melted in my mouth. I recommend the bao buns or other small plates on the menu for those with a small appetite. There are a few options for vegetarians – the tofu dishes – and two possible vegan options like the sweet potato balls and sweet & sour tofu rice. That said, Asian cuisine is known for its staple ingredients of noodles, rice, seafood and chicken, and a lack thereof may inhibit the authentic flavours of Asian fusion.
